Online Radio Surge Reshapes Brisbane Job and Talent Market
Growth in digital audio platforms is driving demand for new skills while pressuring traditional broadcasting roles across the city.
How we reported this

Online radio platforms added 180 new Brisbane-based positions in content production and digital distribution during the first half of 2026, according to industry hiring records.
The increase follows a national lift in online radio listenership that began accelerating after mid-2025, when cheaper data plans and improved mobile apps pulled younger audiences away from FM signals. Local employers now compete for staff who can manage live streams, build playlists and handle ad integration, rather than relying solely on on-air presenters.
Local hiring patterns in Fortitude Valley and Newstead
Stations operating from converted warehouses in Fortitude Valley have posted openings for audio engineers and social-media producers at rates 30 percent higher than the same period last year. Across the river in Newstead, a cluster of small digital-first outlets has started offering short-term contracts that bundle voice work with basic coding for app notifications. These contracts often pay between $65,000 and $82,000, figures that exceed entry-level pay at legacy outlets still based in the CBD.
Brisbane City Council’s Creative Industries program, which runs workshops at the South Bank cultural precinct, recorded 240 registrations for its June digital-audio course, up from 95 the previous June. Participants learn to edit under tight deadlines and meet accessibility standards for live captions.
Numbers behind the shift and next steps for workers
A May 2026 survey of 1,200 Queensland media workers showed 41 percent had applied for at least one online-radio role in the past 12 months, compared with 19 percent two years earlier. Average time to fill such positions has dropped to 28 days, down from 47 days in 2024, indicating stronger applicant pools.
Job seekers should update portfolios with examples of live-stream analytics and cross-platform promotion. Those already in traditional roles can target short courses at TAFE Queensland’s South Brisbane campus, where the next digital-audio intake begins 28 July.
