Brisbane Expands Facilities Venues and Infrastructure Supporting Sport Locally
Council documents and venue records show targeted upgrades to training halls, fields and spectator areas now handling higher daily use.
How we reported this

The Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre in Nathan opened its new indoor multi-sport hall on 15 June after a nine-month build that added four full-size courts and expanded change rooms for 180 athletes at once.
Brisbane organisers are preparing for larger event calendars and school programs that have grown since the 2023-24 season, when local clubs reported a 14 percent rise in junior registrations across rugby league, netball and athletics.
Named sites and daily operations
Staff at the Gabba in Woolloongabba now run weekday morning sessions for the Brisbane Lions academy on the re-laid outer oval that was completed in March, while the Suncorp Stadium precinct on Caxton Street has added a 400-metre public running loop around the western car park that opened to residents last week. Both sites fall under Brisbane City Council venue management contracts renewed in 2025, which require quarterly usage reports sent to the parks and recreation division.
Separate funding from the state sport department covered new floodlights at the Chandler Indoor Sports Centre in the suburb of Chandler, allowing evening volleyball and basketball bookings that were previously limited to daylight hours.
Usage numbers and next steps
Venue logs for the first half of 2026 record 47,800 total visits at the Nathan centre through June, up from 39,200 in the same period last year, with the largest single-day figure of 2,140 recorded on 22 May during a school athletics carnival. Council budgets list a further $4.8 million allocated for field drainage work at Perry Park in Bowen Hills, scheduled to begin in August.
Residents can check current booking calendars on the Brisbane City Council website or call the venue office at Suncorp Stadium for remaining slots in the next four weeks.
