How Brisbane High School Students Can Get Started in Athletics
Pathways include school carnivals, district trials for ages 12 to 19 and national events held in Brisbane.
How we reported this

Brisbane students aged 12 to 19 can trial for representative athletics through new district structures such as the Mt Gravatt District starting in 2026.
School Carnivals and Seasons
Mansfield State High School holds its School Athletics Carnival on Friday 27 June at the Queensland State Athletic Centre for the 2025 school year. Brisbane State High School takes part in the Great Public Schools Track and Field season from August to October and the QGSSSA Athletics season from August to September. These programs give students regular competition within established school calendars.
District Trials for Representative Sport
Students in the 12 to 19 age range trial for Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming through district structures including the Mt Gravatt District. The trials open the door to higher-level representative opportunities across Brisbane schools.
National Events Held Locally
The 2024 Chemist Warehouse National Schools Challenge Final took place in Brisbane, where Wesley College from Victoria won the Senior Boys division and St Peters Lutheran College from Queensland won the Senior Girls division. Ipswich Grammar School claimed the Intermediate Boys title with 193 points while Moreton Bay College won the Intermediate Girls division with 175.5 points. These results show the standard reached by schools that support athletics programs.
Local schools already compete at these levels, so students interested in starting can speak with their athletics coordinators about upcoming carnivals and trial dates. Checking school sports pages provides the first step toward joining the next available event or district trial.
