Numbers reveal scale and emerging gaps
A June 2026 Brisbane Economic Development Agency report counted 47,200 tech-related jobs across the greater Brisbane area, up 19 percent from the same month in 2024. Average annual salaries reached $118,000, yet the same document flagged that only 12 percent of collected sensor data currently undergoes independent ethics review. Privacy advocates note the absence of a public opt-out mechanism for residents whose movement patterns feed the system.
City officials plan to release draft guidelines for data retention and third-party access by 30 September. Residents can review the draft on the council website and submit comments through the online portal until 15 October. Those steps will determine whether the efficiency gains from the Ann Street trial extend to other neighbourhoods or stall over unresolved ethical questions.
