Brisbane Council Allocates Funds to Smart Infrastructure as Growth Accelerates

Brisbane City Council has committed $15 million to the Smarter Suburban Corridors trial, which will install AI-powered traffic signals at key intersections beginning in mid-2026.

The spending comes as the city advances multiple smart-city projects ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games. Council documents link the investments to goals for improved liveability and sustainability through data collection and technology partnerships with residents, businesses and startups.

Smart Poles and corridor upgrades target specific suburbs

Twenty Smart Poles equipped with 4G/5G connectivity, environmental sensors, pedestrian counters and public Wi-Fi are being rolled out across the CBD plus Bracken Ridge and Sandgate. These units feed real-time data into city systems under the Smart, Connected Brisbane framework. The Smarter Suburban Corridors project will complement the poles by applying AI at intersections to ease congestion, with monitoring focused on CBD routes.

Existing programs already show measurable results. The Smart Water Grid uses AI to cut leaks by 15 percent, while a CCTV network running AWS Rekognition AI has helped prevent more than 300 incidents each year. These initiatives sit inside the same strategy document that guides current infrastructure spending.

Partnership model drives ongoing expansion

Council continues to seek collaboration with startups and technology providers to integrate new sensors and analytics tools. The approach avoids large single contracts in favor of incremental additions that build on the current Smart Water Grid and traffic-signal work.
