Brisbane will begin a 12-month trial of AI-powered traffic signals at key intersections in mid-2026 under the $15 million Smarter Suburban Corridors project.
The move forms part of broader upgrades tied to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games that are pushing Queensland toward smart and green infrastructure, including digital twins and updated policies.
Smart poles already collecting data
The Brisbane Smart Pole Project has placed 20 SMART.NODES across the CBD and suburbs including Bracken Ridge, Sandgate and Wynnum. Each unit carries 4G/5G connectivity, environmental sensors, pedestrian counters and smart LED lighting to gather real-time information on city operations.
Brisbane City Council runs the Smart Connected Brisbane initiative that works with residents and startups to apply the data toward better liveability, sustainability and prosperity.
Proven systems already in place
Brisbane became Australia’s first city to install Bluetooth traffic monitors at 900 intersections. A separate Smart Water Grid using Oracle AI has already cut water leaks by 15 percent.
The new signals trial will build on these existing tools. Council will monitor results at the selected intersections to assess congestion relief and the performance of the modernised hardware.
