The Smart Water Grid applies Oracle AI across 2.5 million users and has already cut leaks by 15 percent. The council's CCTV network uses AWS Rekognition to flag anomalies and has prevented more than 300 incidents each year. Each program relies on continuous data streams from fixed infrastructure.
Questions of scale and control
Collecting location, movement and environmental readings at hundreds of fixed points raises practical issues about who can access the raw feeds, how long records are kept and whether algorithms used for traffic or security decisions receive independent review. The Bluetooth network at 900 intersections and the smart-pole array both operate without public opt-out mechanisms described in available project documents.
Council materials frame the work as improving city functions, yet the same documents do not detail formal ethics panels or regular public audits for the AI components. Residents and businesses therefore face an open question of how data gathered for traffic or water management might later support enforcement or commercial uses.
