Brisbane Residents Cut Anxiety Through Daily Park Exercise Routines

Health records released this month show Brisbane adults who exercise outdoors at least three times weekly report 25 percent lower anxiety scores than those who stay sedentary.
The finding arrives as winter temperatures hover around 18 degrees and more residents report work-related tension after the June school holidays. Local GPs note a steady rise in anxiety presentations at clinics across the inner southside since May.
Many turn to the Brisbane River parklands for morning walks that start at the Goodwill Bridge and finish near the Maritime Museum. Others join free community sessions at South Bank Parklands or loop the paths in New Farm Park before heading to nearby cafes on Brunswick Street. These spots remain popular year-round because the subtropical climate keeps paths usable even in July.
A University of Queensland review published in late 2025 tracked 1,200 adults and found those logging 150 minutes of moderate activity each week experienced average reductions of 4.2 points on the GAD-7 anxiety scale. The same data set showed participants who exercised near water, such as along the river at Kangaroo Point, recorded slightly larger gains than gym-only groups.
Brisbane City Council runs several no-cost programs, including the Active Brisbane walking groups that meet twice weekly at New Farm Park. A single yoga class at South Bank costs around $18, while many riverfront paths stay open without fees.
Residents can begin with a 30-minute loop from the Brisbane Powerhouse along the river path toward the city. Those new to exercise should check with a local GP before increasing intensity. Council websites list updated schedules for park-based sessions through the rest of winter.
