Brisbane Schools & Education

Everything families need to know about education in Brisbane — from primary enrolment to university.

QLD Education System

  • Year structure: Year 7 now sits in high school after moving from primary in 2015. Students complete Years 11–12 to finish with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and an ATAR.
  • Certificates: At the end of secondary school, most Queensland students receive the QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education), which records senior learning and vocational achievements. ATAR-eligible students also receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.
  • Department: Public schooling is managed by the Queensland Department of Education.
  • ATAR: The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank compares Queensland Year 12 students against peers across the state on a scale of 0.00 to 99.95. It is used by universities for admissions.
