GreenForge Technologies opened its expanded headquarters this week in Fortitude Valley, with the company set to break ground on a 12-megawatt data centre designed to halve typical cooling costs through advanced liquid immersion systems.

The move arrives as Brisbane businesses confront mounting pressure from national electricity grid strains and the environmental costs of AI expansion, with several local operators now seeking alternatives to conventional server farms that draw heavy power loads.

The site sits two blocks from the Story Bridge on Ann Street and will draw on cooling water from the Brisbane River under a pilot agreement with the Brisbane Economic Development Agency, while also hosting training sessions at the nearby Queensland University of Technology Kelvin Grove campus for regional engineers.

Local partnerships shape the rollout

GreenForge secured a $4.8 million grant through the state’s Digital Futures Fund in March 2026, allowing the firm to install modular racks that can scale capacity without new land purchases in the inner north.

Industry figures show Australian data centres consumed 2.8 per cent of national electricity in 2025, according to Australian Energy Market Operator data released last month, with Brisbane’s share rising faster than the national average because of new cloud contracts signed by financial services firms along Eagle Street.

Next steps for interested operators

Companies wanting to test the facility can book capacity audits through GreenForge’s Newstead office starting 1 August, with initial slots priced at $1,200 per assessment for firms under 50 staff. Early adopters will receive priority access when the first racks go live in early 2027.
