Brisbane itself is a river city rather than an ocean city, but it is surrounded by some of Queensland's finest beaches within 60-90 minutes. The Gold Coast is to the south, the Sunshine Coast is to the north, and Moreton Bay's islands are accessible by ferry — Brisbane residents are spoilt for beach choice even if the CBD is 30 kilometres from any ocean coast.

Moreton Island — just 75 minutes by ferry from the CBD, Moreton Island is one of the world's largest sand islands and home to some of Australia's most beautiful and least crowded beaches. Tangalooma Resort on the western side provides accommodation, whale watching (June-October), and the famous Tangalooma Wrecks for snorkelling, while the eastern ocean beach is accessible by 4WD only and rewards the effort with completely undeveloped beach beauty.

North Stradbroke Island — "Straddie" (accessible by ferry from Cleveland, 45 minutes from Brisbane CBD) has four main beaches: Cylinder Beach, Frenchman's Beach, Main Beach, and Point Lookout. The island has permanent resident population and the beach towns of Point Lookout and Dunwich provide beach town services. Whale watching from Point Lookout headland (June-October) is among the best on the east coast.

Coolangatta (Gold Coast south) — for surf beach quality, Coolangatta at the Gold Coast's southern end (75 minutes from Brisbane CBD) has some of Queensland's best surf breaks (Kirra Point, Greenmount, Rainbow Bay) with the town-beach integration that Surfers Paradise lacks. Coolangatta is where Gold Coast locals surf.

Caloundra (Sunshine Coast south) — the southern Sunshine Coast's Caloundra offers Kings Beach and Bulcock Beach (both excellent) with a quieter atmosphere than the main Sunshine Coast tourist strip further north, and a 75-minute drive from the CBD.
