Brisbane City Council recorded 85,000 visitors at South Bank Parklands during the first week of July last year, a figure that sets up this winter as another strong season for residents to get outside without summer heat.

Lower humidity and daytime highs near 21 degrees make walking routes and outdoor markets more appealing right now, especially for people who want short trips rather than full-day commitments.

Start at the West End markets on Saturday mornings along Boundary Street for local produce, then cross the river to the Newstead Riverwalk for a flat 3-kilometre loop that ends near the Gasworks precinct. Both spots sit within easy reach of frequent bus and ferry services.

Layer choices and route planning

Residents report success with two light jackets and one pair of comfortable shoes for a full day that might include the Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha in the morning and a stop at the Eagle Street Pier food stalls by lunch. Council data shows average July foot traffic on the riverwalk rose 12 percent between 2024 and 2025, confirming the path stays busy but not crowded on weekends.

Prices stay modest: ferry fares from North Quay to Teneriffe run $3.70 with a go card, and most park entry remains free. Families can add the nearby Queensland Museum for $10 child tickets on Sunday afternoons when school holiday programs run through 26 July.

Next steps this month

Check the Brisbane City Council website on Thursday evenings for any path closures, then map two short outings around existing errands. The first weekend in August brings an extra market day at Paddington, giving residents a simple way to test the routine before spring arrives.
