Brisbane's major sporting events stadiums and venues are set to receive a significant upgrade, with the Queensland Government announcing a $500 million investment in sports infrastructure across the state.

This investment is timely, given the recent performances of Australian national teams in international competitions. The Wallabies' narrow loss to Ireland in the Nations Championship and the Socceroos' heartbreaking defeat to Egypt in the World Cup have highlighted the need for top-class facilities to support the development of local athletes. With Brisbane being a major global city with a vibrant sports scene, the upgrade of its sporting infrastructure will have a significant impact on the local community, from grassroots clubs to elite athletes.

In Brisbane, the focus will be on upgrading existing facilities, such as the Brisbane Cricket Ground, known as the Gabba, and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. The Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, located in Nathan, will also receive a significant upgrade, with new tracks and fields being installed. Additionally, the Brisbane City Council has announced plans to develop a new sports precinct in the suburb of Yeerongpilly, which will feature a range of facilities, including a aquatic centre and a gymnastics arena. The precinct will be located on a 10-hectare site on Fairfield Road, and is expected to become a hub for local sports clubs and organisations, including the Brisbane Lions AFL club and the Queensland Reds rugby union team.

Investing in the Future of Sport

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2020-21, there were over 1.4 million participants in organised sport in Queensland, with the most popular sports being Australian Rules football, soccer, and cricket. The investment in sports infrastructure is expected to increase participation rates, with a target of 1.6 million participants by 2025. The cost of the upgrade is estimated to be around $350 per participant, a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of the local community. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, with construction set to commence in early 2027.

The upgrade of Brisbane's sporting infrastructure will not only benefit local athletes but also provide a boost to the local economy. A study by the Queensland Government found that major sporting events can generate up to $10 million in revenue for local businesses, with the 2020 NRL Grand Final at the Brisbane Cricket Ground generating $12.6 million in revenue for local hotels, restaurants, and shops. With the upgraded facilities, Brisbane is expected to attract even more major sporting events, further boosting the local economy. The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, located on Merivale Street, is also expected to benefit from the upgrade, with the centre hosting a range of sports-related events and conferences throughout the year.

So what happens next? The Queensland Government has announced that it will be establishing a new taskforce to oversee the development of the sports precinct in Yeerongpilly. The taskforce will be responsible for ensuring that the project is completed on time and on budget, and that the facilities meet the needs of local sports clubs and organisations. For local residents, the upgrade of Brisbane's sporting infrastructure is a welcome investment in the health and wellbeing of the community. With the project expected to be completed by 2028, residents can look forward to accessing world-class sports facilities, and enjoying the economic and social benefits that come with hosting major sporting events.
