New Farm Park now hosts daily group walks and fitness sessions that mix dog owners with trainers on the grass near Brunswick Street. The park's off-leash zones fill from 6am as people run circuits while their dogs play nearby.

Winter in Brisbane brings steady demand for outdoor spots that allow both exercise and pet time without indoor gym fees. Local councils have expanded dog access rules at riverfront sites since 2024 to support this overlap. South Bank Parklands added new fenced dog areas last year that sit beside existing running paths used by fitness groups.

New Farm Park and South Bank options

At New Farm Park the main oval sees organised meet-ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays where participants alternate between jogging loops and dog agility drills. The site draws from nearby Newstead and Teneriffe residents who walk across the river footbridge. South Bank Parklands offers similar space along the Clem Jones Promenade where trainers run boot camps next to the dog beach section opened in 2025. Both locations stay open after dark with lighting that supports evening sessions.

Brisbane City Council figures from the 2025 annual parks report show 42,000 registered dogs in the inner suburbs and a 28 per cent rise in park permit applications for group fitness events. Entry remains free at these sites though some commercial trainers charge 15 dollars per session. The council also lists 12 dog-friendly parks with fitness infrastructure across the city.

Practical steps for new users

Check the Brisbane City Council website for current off-leash hours before heading out and carry water for both owner and dog on warmer days. Start at the New Farm Park entrance on Oxlade Drive to meet existing groups or join a South Bank session listed on local community boards. Regular users report stronger adherence to routines when pets provide the daily motivation to return to the same park.
