Cycling in Brisbane: The Riverwalk, Bikeway Network and Brisbane Valley Rail Trail
Brisbane has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure over the past decade, with a network of dedicated bikeways that is among the most comprehensive of any Australian capital. The Inner City Bikeway runs approximately 4 kilometres from the CBD through New Farm and Bowen Hills, separated from traffic. The Riverwalk elevated boardwalk on the north bank of the Brisbane River provides an iconic 6-kilometre cycling and walking route between Howard Smith Wharves and Newstead. The New Farm to Kangaroo Point shared path connects across the river via the Goodwill Bridge. The Mt Coot-tha Road climb is the classic road cycling ascent in Brisbane, rising 200 metres through subtropical bush from the Western Freeway. For longer rides, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail departs from Wulkuraka near Ipswich for 160 kilometres northwest through Lockyer Valley. Lime e-bikes and CityCycle stations are available across the inner city. The Brisbane Cycling and Pedestrian Network Map is available from Brisbane City Council.
